About this project

287(g) Watch is a public interest journalism project documenting local law enforcement agencies that have partnered with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement under Section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

The 287(g) program allows ICE to delegate immigration enforcement authority to state and local agencies through a formal Memorandum of Agreement. Officers at participating agencies can be trained and authorized to perform immigration enforcement functions — including identifying, processing, and detaining people for removal.

Why this matters

287(g) Watch builds on an ecosystem of excellent work tracking ICE and 287(g) agreements. Our goal is to make this data easy for people to access and act on, to be visible to search bots and AI, and to produce powerful visuals. We will continue to enrich the tool with deeper history, contact information, and key context from sources on the ground.
